Orono
The town was established in the year 1832. A post office was established in Orono in July 1852, when the settlement had approximately 200 persons. The post office was named after the town of Orono, Maine, because the scenery appeared to be similar. Orono, the name of a town near Bangor, Maine, is reported to have been offered by a tourist from Maine in 1852, leading to the establishment of the post office at that location.
The village, which was designated as a police village in 1854, remained modest but thriving. The arrival of the Canadian Northern Ontario Railway in 1911, which played a significant role in the development of the community throughout the early decades of the twentieth century.
Farming was, and continues to be, a significant source of income in the community. Before the construction of the 35/115, a large number of cars stopped in the town on their trip from Lindsay to Newcastle. There are roughly 1800 people living there.
The Municipality of Clarington, in which Orono is located, was founded as a result of the amalgamation of the Townships of Clarke and Darlington, which were previously separate municipalities. Historically, the town of Orono, located near Bowmanville, ON area, served as the administrative center for Clarke Township.
Orono, now the fourth-largest metropolitan neighborhood in Clarington, is attractive to individuals who want a quieter, more rural way of life than the city. The downtown consists of a number of tiny stores and a central town hall, which are typical of villages around Ontario and the northern United States in their design.
The Pines and Clarke High Schools, located just off Highway 115 on the border of Newcastle, serve as the primary educational institutions for the majority of Orono’s youth residents who attend public school. Both schools are among the oldest continuously operating Middle and Secondary schools in the area.
The Clarke Raiders, the local high school hockey team, are one of the best in the district, and they represent the best of the best. The team is made up of players from the American Athletic Association as well as players from the local clubs in Newcastle and Orono.
The Orono Leafs, the local CC hockey team, was founded in the late 1990s and continues to be a popular and successful organization.
